Panda Rattle Pattern

With this pattern you will easily finish one of the animal rattle I lately designed. I hope you will enjoy it. ;) It is quick project. If you advanced crocheter you can finish the rattle in 2,5-3 hours. If you are a beginner it might take you a little more time.

This is my very first post in english and also first pattern I published so be gentle. But I am looking forward to hear your opinions about it!

PANDA RATTLE PATTERN

Things you need:
  • black and white yarn (I use 100% cotton LANGYarns Baby Cotton, you don’t need much - I used 1 skein of black and 1 skein of white to crochet 5 rattles)
  • 2 mm crochet hook (yarn is for 2,5 mm crochet hook, but rattle need to be crochet very tight)
  • something to ring inside the rattle (I used little round bells, because you can sew them inside and they are more safe for children - you can see it on one of the last pictures in this post)
  • tapestry needle
  • scissors
  • filling for toys

Things you need to know:
  • how to make a chain, single crochet, slip stitch
  • how to decrease using sc2tog stitch
  • how to make a magic ring
  • how to change colors

Explenation of the abbreviations used in the pattern:
ch - chain
sc - single crochet
ss - slip stitch
sc2tog - single crochet two together, decreasing stitch

Notes about changing color.
  • In the handle I finish whole round in the one color. I do the slip stitch in the same color. Then I make ch1 in the new round in the new color and I continue with it.
  • In the head when you change color in the middle of the round you need to start with previous stitch (the last one in the old color). Make the stitch as you normally would, stop when you have 2 loops on the hook, before you yarn over and pull through those loops, change the color and finish the stitch with new one. Now you have last stitch in the old color, and new color on the hook to start new stitch with it. When you need to make 4 black stitches you need to make 3 and a half black, change color, and finish the 4th black stitch with white yarn. It will look like whole 4 black stitches.

The rattle is made from the bottom up.

Handle (made in rounds)

with white color
ch 10, slip stitch in the first chain stitch (make a ring)

R1. ch1, sc in first stitch of the previous round, sc around, slip stitch in the first stitch (10 sc)
R2-R4. repeat R1.
R5-R8. change color for black, repeat R1.
R9-R12. change color for white, repeat R1.
R13-R16. change color for black, repeat R1.
R17-R20. change color for white, repeat R1.
R21-R24. change color for black, repeat R1.
R25-R28. change color for white, repeat R1.
R29-R32. change color for black, repeat R1.
R33-R36. change color for white, repeat R1.

Handle is complet. You can cut the black yarn and stuff it inside handle. Don’t cut the white yarn, you will use it in the next part of the rattle. Now is time to stuff the handle with filling. It will be almost impossible later.

Handle is complete, now is perfect time to stuff it with filling

Join two sides of the handle together, it will be the base for the head of the toy

Head (made in rounds)

with white color (just continue from the handle)
R1. ch1, sc in the first stitch, of the previous round (the last round of the handle), 9 sc around (don’t slip stitch into first sc), ch12, sc in the first stitch on the R1 of the handle on the other side of the handle (see the picture, try not to turn the handle but bend it gently), 9 sc around, ch12, ss in the first stitch in this round. Now you should have base for the rest of the toy. (20 sc, 24 ch)
R2. ch1, sc in the first stitch of the previous round, 9 sc around, sc in each chain from previous round, 10 sc in the sc on the other side of the toy, sc in each chain from previous round, ss in the first stitch in this round. (44 sc)
R3. ch1, 44 sc around
R4. repeat R3

Below a few rounds are made with both colors. I wrote only the number of stitches you should make in which color, to make the instruction clearer. If you don’t know how to exactly change colors in the middle of the row, please see the notes at the beginning of the patter.

R5. ch1, 11 white sc around, 4 black sc, 4 white sc, 4 black sc, 21 white sc, ss in the first stitch in this round. (44 sc)

It is how you change the color in this part of the rattle

If you are not sure how to change colors please see the notes in the beginning of the pattern

Panda's head without a nose looks a little bit creepy;p

Ears (make 2)

with black yarn
R1.Start with magic ring, make 6 sc in the magic ring, don’t join it into a circle, but tighten the magic ring.
R2. ch1, turn the work, 2 sc in the last stitch from last row, 4 sc, 2 sc in the first sc in the last row (8 sc), cut the yarn (leave a longer piece of yarn to use it later for sewing the ear to the panda’s head) and finish off.

All you need to finish this rattle

The final sewing

Putting the rattle together.

Sew the ears in the top of the panda’s head. With piece of the black yarn make panda’s nose between her eyes.  Sew the bell inside the rattle. Stuff the toy with the filling and close the rattle sewing the bottom part of the head with white yarn.

Your rattle is finished!
I hope it brings a lot of joy to the child you want to give it to.
